Pursuing Mountains

Приєднався 16 лип 2019
Hi Friends!
We are Liz and Alex and we make outdoor adventure and travel videos. We strongly believe that dreams are meant to be pursued, and we hope to motivate others to get outside their comfort zones and do the same. We feel the most alive and have the most personal growth when we push ourselves outside of our comfort zone and know others will as well.
In 2019 we quit our jobs to travel the world for a planned 1.5 years and started documenting it here on UA-cam, which while the trip didn't go as long as planned due to the state of the world in 2020, we were able to develop a love for video creation. Before going back to full-time work again we took on one last big adventure of bikepacking 1,000 miles of the Great Divide Mountain bike route as complete beginners. That trip instilled a love for "journey or expedition" type travel and now we plan to continue to document those adventures here on our channel.

Thanks for the video! I think the total amount is reasonnable, considering you did not wild camp. I just came back from a Zurich-Istanbul bike trip, I’m from Canada and I flew with Swiss air and Lufthansa, and they end up not charging anything for my bike box - I used the included 1 bagage allowance ! I think I am super lucky but I had 0 puncture in 3000km 🫣 (I have Marathon plus swalbe)
I did a route from Nordkapp (Norway) to Malta. It took about three months, and I spent about £1000 (about $1300). I did wild camp alot, and even foraged in some places. I would never do a long tour with tubeless. On the above tour I had 2 punctures. A tube is easy to fix and a spare tube is easy to carry. I always get my bike serviced and put new cables, brake pads, and new tyres on before a long tour. P.s. I loved watching your journey. It showed the highs and lows that come with all bike tours.
Hello from Luxembourg! It's truly fascinating to see people exploring my backyard. I can't help but be amazed that you've taken on the challenge of the toughest track that crosses over into France. I remember attempting it myself a few years back, facing the same obstacles of the same collapsed trees in the mud pits. What a journey filled with adventure and I can't help but admire your spirit!
Great content - I am looking at that same Airbnb for a month perhaps - any thoughts on spending a month there is janauary?
Sounds Amazing! You def should! Such a beautiful place
So much fun! I’ve lived on Van Island basically my entire life and I only recently learned this is a thing! While I’ve never bike packed before, I can’t wait to give it a go. Your video instilled a great deal of confidence :) thank you
That’s great! You should definitely give it a try! Such beautiful trails
Excellent video!! First one I’ve watched. Love that you made a series. That is an awesome app to know about thank you!! I want to bike tour Greece/Croatia soon
Viewing fm Philippines 🇵🇭
Hi I haven't watched all the videos but really enjoyed those I have and will catch up with the rest over time. From a Scottish point of view I think your costs sound very reasonable and definitely encourage me to give something like this a try. The mixture of accommodation was very sensible, I wouldn't wild camp either, and the fact that you tried local foods is definitely a part of the experience. It sounds like you were almost disappointed by the overall cost but really I cant think of a cheaper and more authentic way to spend three months in Europe. Excellent editing and very entertaining ,well done.
We call it Kremšnita :)
Well, you influenced me enough for us to follow your footsteps! Thanks to your recs we had an amazing day yesterday. On today's hike of the opposite side my daughter wouldn't stop trying to talk us into walking an additional 45 min to go get more milkshakes from the day before! We have lived in cartegena for a year and I can't believe this place is in the same country!
Thanks for visiting our city! 🥑🚠☕ #BogotaYourWay
Why does the Indian guy keep smiling
Can you not store your bike inside the hotel room? Why would they stop you?
enjoyed the video! I apologize for the government's choice up the ridiculous steepest route up the Malahat leaving Victoria. They have a perfectly good easy-grade former railroad grade they should have used, which would have been more useful for commuters also. Maybe some day it will be a proper rails to trail as the train will never return.
I work for the parks department that manages the trails you used for a substantial portion of your trip. It's always interesting to hear how visitors, especially from out of town, feel about the trails. Glad to hear you enjoyed your experience!
move the trail up the Malahat to the E&N railbed please.
Great to see you enjoyed this part of Southern Alberta. Canmore is certainly a jewel of the Rockies. We're spoiled here in Calgary to have all that wild space just an hour away. You've inspired me to try that route on a bike - probably the Jasper to Canadian Border. Thanks for sharing!
@15:32 This is a Barred Owl (Strix varia), quite common on Vancouver Island.
I think I watched all your tour videos, they were great. Thanks for sharing that. But I was suffering seeing you use so big / knobbly tyres. That must have limited your daily range too. I don't agree with your tubeless conclusion :) - good bike-touring tyres, spare tubes and a patch kit would be my choice. Overall - I wish I had time to do a similar tour - I am sure you will have nice memories from it.
Inspirational flash. Bravi !
Thanks!
Hey there love the videos .I'm doing the same route as you .I'm in Hungary just about to cross into Serbia. Did you need to register at a police station within 24 hours of arriving for a white card. Thanks 👍
Thank you! We didn’t need to register at a police station. It’s possible that the rules could have changed, but I’m not sure. But of luck! It sounds like an exciting trip
Thanks
When I go on long bike rides I take a liter of sealant and start with brand new tires.
Nice! How often do you add more sealant typically?
I have the Pinion belt drive 18 speed, it is so awesome. No oil, no derailleur, easy shifting from 1-18 in a second. Just remember to carry a spare belt just incase, but Pinion will send you parts where ever you are in the world right away.
Nice Im from vic and saw your vid. Thanks for this 😊.
Nice! Glad you found us ☺️
Hey, I'm really enjoying your videos. They are actually quite useful for planning our own adventure. I would be interested in knowing what make and model your tent was that got destroyed?
Thanks! The tent was the Big Agnes Fly Creek Mountain Glow 2
Well done. Thank you. You satisfy, albeit vicariously, a large proportion of my interest in travelling. Love your storytelling style too.
Thank you! So glad it helps satisfy your interest in travel! ☺️
Very good content
Thanks!!! 🙌🏼
Great work Liz with the pastries 👌
It’s a hard job but someone has to do it 😆
@@PursuingMountains 🤣👏👍👌
After having made the experience I strongly suggest not getting a belt-driven bike. The belt is wonderful in combination with an e-bike but it is not made for only human powered bikes. The belt eats lots of the energy you put onto the pedal. I got so annoyed after my first tour through the french alpes that I exchanged the belt for a normal chain. Don't believe the marketing bulls*t, do not even trust other UA-camrs who tell you how wonderful the belt allegedly is. You might take into consideration that it is easy to buy a chain anywhere in the world but not a belt. You would have to carry a spare. The Rohloff hub is a perfect choice and definitely better than a Pionion gear box. I have both and I think I know what I talk about. I disagree about tubeless: Better get Schwalbe Marathon tyres and normal inner tubes. Easy to replace, anywhere to get. I just went to the UK for three weeks and got not one puncture.
That’s good to know about the belt driven drive. We are leaning towards the Rohloff for a future really long tour for sure!
I too have several bikes with belt drives. My experience is quite the opposite. Belt feels different, but is as effective as chain. And it is much more durable, especially in harsh conditions. I would recommend belt drive, at least for longer distances and/or winter cycling.
Claim that you couldn't find 29" tubeless ready tire in Zagreb s ridiculous. Zagreb has a local mountain and mtb scene is on the rise - and shops are well stocked.
Maybe you missed the part where I said I couldn’t find a 29 inch tubeless ready tire. I went to 3 different bike shops, and none of them carried a 29 inch by 2.25 tubeless ready tires. Our rims can’t take a more narrow tire. Maybe other bikes shops have them but not the ones I went to. I tried calling more bike shops and no one answered their phone.
Wow calm down, this was their experience not yours. Nobody would lie about not being able to get tires.
Do you patch your tubes at all? A patch kit is small and easy to use. And then you can reuse the same tube, it can do multiple patches. One thing that happened to me is that the outer casing had a tiny piece of glass lodged, couldn't even feel it with my fingertip, but every once in a while it would puncture my inner tube. So it's good to note the location of the puncture before putting in a new tube and check the tire carefully.
We did towards the end of our trip in Turkey. Unfortunately the tube we had kept getting punctures in different places,we ended up with 5-6 different patches on it. We determined that the rim may have been puncturing it
I'm a big fan of bikes with nothing special on them. Standard size tires, no fancy shifters, 21 speed that you can take a cassette off a Walmart bike to fix it in a pinch. Cool fancy parts are great until they break in the middle of nowhere. I spent about $15k Canadian in 6 weeks in Japan, you guys did great.😂 I stayed in hotels nearly every night though, only camped 3 times.😂
Another informative video. We are heading off for our European bike tour in three days and have taken on board many of your experiences and tips so thank you for the many posts over the last 6 months. I hope you can find the time to travel more and document your experiences for us less experienced and adventurous types they are great infotainment. Many thanks.
Aww thanks so much for commenting ☺️Seeing comments like yours is what helps keep us motivated to create these videos! Where do you plan to go on your European bike tour?
We thought your total spend would surpass that by a LOT! Especially with some of the costs in Western Europe! So well done! 🙌
Thanks!!!
Great information, Thank you
The experiences you both gained in your travels are priceless, the best assets you both have is your age and health, anything else can be improved modified and upgraded. When you look back after your middle ages you won't remember difficult issues but you will remember the times you both enjoyed what you wanted to do. Live it to the max! 👌👌
Thank you! So true! Wouldn’t trade our travel and memories for anything :)
Life is full of adjustment I am not in the same mind set as I was 20 0r even 10 years ago Moving forward is the key ( change is good) Really enjoyed the trip can't wait to see more
Thank you! We are trying to embrace change at the moment. But we both have missed the road too. Still trying to find the right balance ⚖️
Hey, less than $100/day for two people is my own slow-travel budget and I think you did a great job with it! The mix of accommodations, outings and great food made for a rewarding trip without sacrificing much IMO, and you were able to handle the problems as they happened. Success! 😊
Thank you! Thats similar to our slow travel budget as well. We thought we might have been able to do an even lower budget for this trip but didn’t turn out that way 🙃
$48/person/day is.not that high. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks!
Your budget is completely reasonable! Just over $1k/person/month. Your videos have been great, as I'm planning to bike from Copenhagen to Spain starting this fall.
Oh wow that sounds like a great trip! We’ve heard great things about the bikepacking in Spain.
I love how much you care about the animals.
Hey guys, thanks so much for this video! I'm doing this route in a couple of days and it was great to see your report! Can you pinpoint where the construction you had to go around is on the trail? I couldn't get a spot at Bamberton, so I'll be going straight to the ferry...I'm wondering if that will also keep me from hitting that closure. I'm so much more excited after watching your video! Thanks again!!!
they were on a side route away from the figure8 connecting to Bamberton campsite. It is just a paved road from Shawnigan lake to the Mill Bay ferry terminal.
The Rohloff is so good. Mine is chain driven, and after many tours including GDMBR and Baja Divide I'm totally sold on reliability and also the reduced required cleaning and maintenance. You're welcome to come test it out on my Tumbleweed Prospector now that you're in WA!
Aww thanks! That’s good to hear about the Rohloff. Have you had any issues with it so far?
@@PursuingMountains None. Have changed the oil and chain once in over 5000+mi, but that's all. The belt option may even be less effort, though the initial investment and proprietary elements are challenging. I put wax lube on the chain about once or twice a week while touring.
Did you dry your sleeping bags with tennis balls
I had never heard of you guys but I recently started getting into cycling and bikepacking and the algorithm fed me your first video of this series. I’m usually like extremely picky with these videos as sometimes they’re either too superficial or they just skimp on the experiences. However, I really enjoyed how you guys broke it down into a series to give each country or segment its time. It’s unfortunate your last segment ended up being a mess but that’s what makes it even more memorable. I hope you guys consider bike packing across the US one day, with a similar approach as this one. Follow earned.
Aww thank you so much for your kind comment! That’s great to hear that you like the style of the videos, including all the detail ☺️
Your videos are fantastic. I’ve just watched previous 2 and loving them. Am i going to binge watch until Istanbul lol? Btw i have subscribed too!
Thank you for commenting! Let us know if you do binge the whole series! It’s a long one :)
